What are PEMF?
Pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) therapy is a new approach to pain management that uses electromagnetic fields to create a pulsing, moving energy to assist in regulating your cells. These energy waves could change the way your body copes with pain. It is commonly used in the treatment of areas of the body that won’t heal. This includes fractures that won’t heal as well as damaged ligaments and tendons.
How do Pulsed Electromagnetic Fields Work?
PEMF uses electrical energy to direct a series of magnetic pulses through injured tissue whereby each magnetic pulse induces a tiny electrical signal that stimulates cellular repair. This process if FDA-approved to fuse bones and can be used to treat pain and edema in soft tissue since it’s formation over 60 years ago.
How Effective are Pulsed Electromagnetic Fields?
PEMF’s have been tested repeatedly. Here are some excerpts from highly respected medical journals to verify our claims:
Tibia Fractures: “For ununited tibial fractures, 81% of reported cases healed with PEMF vs 82% with surgery. After multiple failed surgeries, the success rate of PEMF is reported to be greater than with surgery; this discrepancy increases with additional numbers of prior surgeries.” – Healio
Tendon Regeneration: “the mechanical stimulation obtained using PEMFs may play a role for treatment of tendinopathy and for tendon regeneration, increasing in vitro TGF-β production, as well as scleraxis and collagen I gene expression.” – NCBI
Osteoarthritis of the Knee: “(…)when trials employing high-quality methodology were analysed, PEMF was significantly more effective at 4 and 8 weeks than the placebo. When the efficacy of PEMF was evaluated for function, a significant improvement was observed 8 weeks after the treatment initiation(…)” – Oxford Journals
