Orthobiologics Treatment for Chronic Back Pain

Have you heard of orthobiologics treatment? It’s a popular form of regenerative medicine in South Florida for patients who are in pain. If you’re suffering from chronic back pain and are not inclined to get surgery for it, you might have come across this term before.

According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), orthobiologics consist of substances used by orthopaedic doctors to facilitate faster healing of injured muscles, tendons and ligaments, as well as broken bones. These substances are naturally produced by the body and processed in the laboratory to intensify its concentration before it is injected into the injured area.

Orthobiologics treatment falls under regenerative medicine, which is meant to treat patients with back pain without going through surgery. At Genlife regenerative medicine, we believe that orthobiologics treatments help patients heal better and faster than traditional approaches, including surgery. In fact, there’s a growing number of athletes who have benefitted from this treatment.

Types of Orthobiologics Treatment

There are different types of orthobiologics treatment but platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy is the most feasible for chronic back pain. This therapy consists of using a protein-rich substance drawn from your own blood to facilitate the healing process of the body.

According to the Journal of Pain Research, PRP is deemed effective and safe in reducing back pain. It could even work for the treatment of degenerative disc disease, which leads to chronic back pain.

Other types of orthobiologics treatment include:

  • Autologous Protein Solution (APS)
  • Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate (BMAC)
  • Stem Cell Therapy

Orthobiologics Pain Management, Miami: What to Expect?

Orthobiologics treatment is usually an outpatient procedure and takes at least an hour to complete. While at the doctor’s clinic, medical technicians will “harvest” what is needed for the treatment from your body.

With a procedure like PRP or APS, it’s a matter of drawing blood from your veins that will be processed and spun in a centrifuge to create a potent substance. For BMAC or stem cell therapy, the substance will be drawn from the bone marrow in your pelvis. You may need to be under local anesthetic for these procedures.

You will need to slow down and rest for 48 to 72 hours after the orthobiologics treatment, since you’ve been injected with growth factors that should not be disturbed. As such, your doctor for regenerative medicine in South Florida might advise you to refrain from walking in the next three days or from doing physical activities for the next two weeks.

Six weeks after the treatment, you will have to return to the doctor for a follow-up visit and for an assessment of how your body responds to the procedure.
